Parents must be crazy

Dear all,

I am a born optimist. If in 20 years I say "can't', "not possible", "No way", "what rubbish", "Nope"....etc etc please blame my parents and anyone else around me right now. They are such pessimists. I keep proving them wrong whenever they say "O it'll hurt you", "Don't do that, it's dangerous", "Stop right now, you'll fall" etc etc, but they just won't accept it! Pah...

Sambar podi is fully safe. Look I've opened the box. It's on my finger now. Ooo- run and catch game- mommy behind me- run run run... see?!?! it's safe. My eyes are watering a little bit but that's because I was laughing and shaking the box for extra effect!

I can fit inside the bottom drawer of the TV cabinet. If I can just get this wire out of the way.. There! it's not bothering me now- except for that loud noise - hmm...Ooo look funny box with red and green light on the floor. Ok. I'm in the drawer. If I could just get my fingers in just before I close the door...Ouch- next time I'll do it with better timing. Why is amma pulling me out of the room?!?!

OM! So this is what Appa lights every morning. Hmm. it tastes like...CHALK! Yummm. What does it taste like before it's lit? where is that box- Appa keeps it in the back. Ah there it is. Hmm. tastes like.... I don't know- but it's very interesting. O God.. why is Amma always looking for me.

Look I can swing without holding on... Ok small slip but it's Amma's fault- those pants are so slippery- i would've slipped anyway!

Amma look. My friends and I found this utterly amazing gift we have- When we pull the grass, it comes out ALONG with the mud. How unbelievingly stupendous is that! AND the mud hangs onto my nails...Ok why is she glaring?!?!?

Lotion is nice- I like lotion. It's good for my skin. It smells nice. Lots and lots and lots on my tummy. Ok some for little dress also and for teddy toy.... :( she snatched it away. So weird- first she says I have to put lotion on. Then she says "What are you doing. Aggghhhhh don't waste it.." Just can't understand these adults. They need to go to school!

I am always so careful. Look I'll cut your nails for you- it won't hurt OK. Uh oh... some blue stuff- or is it red..black... brown??? sorry my mom's still not good with teaching colours yet... Amma look some funny coloured water is coming out of my toe.. Why does she always look so wide -eyed to me! I hope I don't inherit this wide-eyed habit of hers!

I am so good with books- I made two out of one..and I still got that funny wide -eyed look. This time I also got a "you are going to get a spanking if you do that again. Books are like God. How will you learn anything if you destroy them..."

Sometimes I feel bad for her cos she's old and forgetful and looks tired in the evening. So sometimes I just walk over and give her a kiss and call her 'sweettiiiii' and she'll forget why she was wide-eyed a minute ago! That way parents are so gullible. It's funny in a way. But I let them believe they are in charge- just so they feel good and don't end up with self-esteem issues. As it is they are such pessimists- I wouldn't be able to handle other emotional issues if they had any.

Let's just hope I remain an optimist and turn my parents around some day!

:)

MY ALONE

A few days ago, my daughter walked off to a birthday party saying "I will go my alone." MY ALONE was her new English phrase for the week meaning 'all by myself'. Not just 'myself', "ALL BY MYSELF"! And as I watched her walk down the hallway to the neighbour's house, I felt a funny feeling in the pit of my tummy. Of all the funny-feelings-in-tummy motherhood brings you, this one was new. WAS MY BABY GROWING UP? You see, mothers are usually programmed to be blind to any of these so-called hints of growing up. So obviously it surprised me that I was thinking this at all! Growing up in Mommy language usually refers to other things like: 1. Baby Being toilet trained after months of cleaning up and mopping up and coercing and making sssss sounds while the bored baby sits on the Potty. 2. Baby Being able to chew food -accompanied by a lot of "CHEW CHEW CHEW" and nudging the food stuck in the cheek. 3. Baby Giving up the feeding bott...

A Box of Questions this BHOGI

The Hanuman temple at the end of the street where my parents live has been our go-to temple ever since I can remember. Whether it is a prayer for someone ill or a ThankYou for a milestone reached, sometimes 'just-like-that' and sometimes for a heart-to-heart, this Hanuman has been a constant in the lives of those who live nearby. A month ago, the temple was decked up for Hanuman Jayanti and my dad couldn't stop raving about how majestic our beloved Hanuman looked, how exquisitely the ceiling had been painted with tulasi and flowers and what a beautifully festive look the entire street had taken on. There was a constant stream of visitors for Him that day- each one being fed with a sumptuous lunch. Would this be any Hanuman Jayanti anywhere in the world? Probably! So why go on harping about this one? Because the choicest flowers were hand picked and strung together by a Muslim. The lunch was joyfully prepared by boys whose caste and religion no one knows. The entire cost fo...

Aham Brahmasmi

The Atman cries out to the Brahman “Who am I?” Not hearing a response, he cries out again “Why am I here?” Baffled by the silence of the Brahman, the Atman proclaims “I am the supreme manifestation of reality.” To which he hears no argument but what stirs within him is an unexplained restlessness. He is angered by his mute spectator. “Your silence only tells a story of ignorance”, he reluctantly exclaims, half in anger, half in despair. “I will figure this out on my own”, he says determinedly and sets out.  He travels far and wide. He consults with magicians. He consults with ascetics. He asks the winds and the rain. He asks the swift sand about her maker. “Who made you?” she retorts sarcastically. Stamping her into the earth with a hurt ego, he sets out further. He speaks to the mountains, he speaks to the snow. “Shouldn’t you aim to climb up once in a while?” he asks the snow over Mount Kailash. “Your descent is your end- as you melt and trickle down the plains only to end...
